At the foot of an extinct volcano, the "Rebenbummler" leisurely drives around one of the most impressive cultural landscapes in the heart of Europe.

Regardless of the season, the Upper Rhenish man-made and cultural landscape of the Kaiserstuhl, which is characterised by vineyards, fruit trees, woods and of course the Rhine, is a worthwile destination.
The 26 km long section of the Kaiserstuhl line from Riegel to Breisach, is said to be one of the most beautiful museum railway lines in Germany.

The nostalgic trip with the museal railway "Rebenbummler" starts at the railway station Riegel DB (0,0 km). At the station Riegel DB there are connections from and to the regional trains of the Rhine Valley railway to Basel and Hamburg.

Shortly after leaving the train station Riegel DB you will get rewarded with a pittoresque view of the chapel of St. Michaelsberg (241 metres, a former Roman Mithraic temple) and of the listed buildings of the brewery of Riegel, which was founded in 1834.
After crossing the Leopold Canal, which originates from the era of the straightening of the Rhine by the German engineer Tulla and where the Black Forest rivers Dreisam, Elz and Glotter flow into, we arrive at the railway station Riegel-Ort (1,7 km). These days, in the railway building there is the cabaret theatre "Kumedi", that is Baden dialect for "comedy".

On the continuation of the journey in a westward direction, towards Endingen, passing fertile fields and vineyards, we will then reach the actual Kaiserstuhl. Nearby is the St. Katharinenhöhe (492 metres) and the "Endinger Steingrube", which is among the best vineyard locations along the Kaiserstuhl region due to its rich volcanic soil.

With the arrival at the railway station in Endingen (5,5 km) we not only encounter a wonderful historic old town centre with lovely houses and winding alleys but also the operating centre of the modern Kaiserstuhl railway, which is organised nowadays by the SWEG. The service of all SWEG routes in the Breisgau region is run by this former Further-Austrian town of Endingen. The regio-shuttle of the Kaiserstuhl railway and the valley railway of Münstertal as well as the Breisgau S-Bahn are being serviced here in the associated repair shops.
Along with the winegrowing villages of Amoltern, Kiechlinsbergen and Königschaffhausen, Endingen is one of the biggest winegrowing communities in Baden and was first mentioned in record in 862 a. Ch..

Crossing Endingen's neighbouring place Königschaffhausen (9,1 km) we will then reach the winegrowing village Sasbach (12,2 km) - we are now traversing one of Germany's biggest fruit-growing regions. According to the season you can enjoy a breathtaking view on a sea of flowers. In spring, there are cherries and plums and in summer and in the early autumn apples and pears that seem to be within grasp. The view reaches as far as the "Limberg" of Sasbach where the Celts and the Romans had already settled. In times of good visibility one may also see castle "Hochkönigsburg" in the Vosges (France).
The "Limberg" of Sasbach is also said to be the birthplace of King Rudolph of Habsburg in 1218, the ancestor of the German/Austrian Habsburg dynasty.

After passing Sasbach the railway line leaves the Rhine river plains and raises steadily. The museal train rides along the Rheinaue wetlands providing a wonderful insight into the big nature reserve and its unique flora and fauna. The Kaiserstuhl region is one of the few places with the greatest diversity of orchidaceous plants in Europe - more than 30 different types have already been registered.

Before arriving in the town of Jechtingen (14,7 km) we firstly pull into the impressing wine paths of the Kaiserstuhl. After Jechtingen the steepest part of the railway line begins up to the train station Burkheim-Bischoffingen (16,7 km). Here one can see the "Totenkopf" ("skull", 552 metres) for the first time, which is also the highest point of the extinct volcano of the Kaiserstuhl.
